The Del Mar Home Market
Wooded hillsides rise above Del Mar's beaches and downtown strip, affording several luxury and semi-luxury residential spots. Del Mar real estate values extend well into the millions, with occasional listings priced in the neighborhood of $50 million. Del Mar also features a wide variety of waterfront homes and luxury properties surrounding Torrey Pines State Reserve on the beach at the southern edge of town, and the adjoining high end golf club, Torrey Pines Golf Course.
"Del Mar" is Spanish for "of the sea," and was named by local resident Ella Loop, who owned a beach tent city with her husband. The Loops attracted interest in Del Mar by selling 50 x 140 foot lots during the early 20th century. The city grew rapidly during the late 1920s and finally incorporated as an independent city in 1959.
Attractions in Del Mar include the Del Mar Fairgrounds, home to the horse racing track and a popular annual fair, and the Del Mar Plaza on Camino del Mar, with its collection of unique shops, galleries, dining spots, and a gourmet market.
