The Escondido Home Market
As the fourth largest city in San Diego County, Escondido has a thriving downtown that's great for walking around for hours, offering a wide variety of shop, galleries, and restaurants. The city center also has several large parks and high-profile public attractions, like the California Center for the Arts, and Mingei Museum. Just northeast of the Escondido real estate area lies Valley Center, a popular small community known for its wineries, museums, and a large destination casino.
Escondido, which means "hidden" in Spanish, was settled by ranchers and farmers as part of Mexico in the early 1800s. The area's fertile soil and great year-round growing conditions made it a prime agricultural spot, home to a wide variety of fruit and nut crops. In 1895 local farming expanded considerably with the construction of a dam for a local reservoir and irrigation source, Lake Wohlford, which still exists today. Escondido's most popular agricultural exports have included muscat grapes, avocados, lemons, and walnuts.
Steady residential development since the early 1970s has woven a variety of beautiful neighborhoods throughout the green hills of Escondido. Properties here are often quite large and privately situated amid rocky bluffs and custom landscaping. Many west-facing Escondido homes offer breathtaking sunset views across San Diego county.
